Book Dartmoor with confidence

With 365 square miles of outstanding beautiful moorland on your doorstep some would argue that the Dartmoor holiday home, Three Pound Cottage is the perfect get away in these uncertain times.  However, owners Michaela and Brian have responded to the Coronavirus scare by giving guests confidence with increased flexibility.

Michaela explained “in these uncertain times, guests are rightly concerned whether they’ll be able to travel and enjoy their self catering holiday on Dartmoor.  Whilst most travel companies are offering free amendments, we feel it’s only right to go the extra mile.

Three Pound Cottage the Self Catering Dartmoor Holiday Rental is offering full refunds due to travel uncertainty because of Coronavirus

“Ever Present” Local

One of Lustleigh’s locals, Mike Peace, is a member of an exclusive group known as the “Ever Presents”.  This select group has only 10 members from across the country, all of whom have completed every London Marathon – 39 so far!  All 10 are preparing for the 40th Marathon and attended the launch at Tower Bridge.  They were presented with Spirit of the London Marathon Medals and well deserved too.  Although covered by ITV, the South Wales Argus has a far better article if you’d like to read more.

Hats off to Mike, we wish him the best of luck for the 26th April.

2020 is the year to visit Devon

Historic Dartmouth is a great day out from the dartmoor holiday cottage

Dartmouth

Devon 24/7 have produced a great article explaining why 2020 is the year to visit Devon.  As if the warm climate, Dartmoor, 2 dramatic coastlines with award winning beaches, clotted cream and cider wasn’t enough.  There’s an extensive array of food festivals, regattas, sailing events plus 2020 is the 400 year anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers setting sail on the Mayflower to discover America.  Both Plymouth and Dartmouth will be marking the occasion with week long celebrations at the back end of the summer.   And if that’s not enough, Plymouth will again be hosting the British Firework Championships in mid August.

If visiting Devon make sure to stay at Three Pound Cottage, the best self catering holiday cottage on Dartmoor.

4th Prettiest Street in Devon, again!

the pathway past the dartmoor holiday rental Three Pound Cottage in Lustleigh is the 4th prettiest street in Devon

4th prettiest street in Devon

Devon Life magazine have again named the path to Wreyland, which starts from Three Pound Cottage, as the 4 prettiest street in Devon.  No surprise to find Clovelly high street is top of the list again although some would argue that having to pay to walk down the street puts it a league of its own.

We were thrilled to see this article, not because it makes Wreyland Path the prettiest street on Dartmoor, we knew that already.  It was seeing our Dartmoor holiday home in the photograph.

100 Years of Who Dunnit!

Agatha Christie, Devon's most famous author, wrote her first novel on Dartmoor nearby Three Pound Cottage, the Dartmoor self catering holiday home

Devon’s most famous author, Agatha Christie, wrote 88 novels and 19 plays!

2020 brings the 100th year anniversary of Agatha Christie’s first novel “The Mysterious Affair at Styles” which she wrote whilst staying on Dartmoor at Haytor, not too far from our Dartmoor Holiday Home, Three Pound Cottage.

Devon’s most famous novelist wrote 82 detective novels and 19 plays including the Mousetrap.  She also wrote 6 romance novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott.  You probably knew that already, but did you know she was one of Britain’s first “stand up” surfers in 1922 at Waikiki in Honolulu?  I didn’t until I read this fantastic article about Agatha Christie with some amazing old photo’s.

Make sure you visit Torquay and see some of her childhood haunts for yourself whilst staying at Three Pound Cottage, the self catering holiday home from home.

Apples Galore!

If you had been in Lustleigh on the 4th you would be excused for thinking there was a raucous shindig going on.  It may have seemed like it but instead it was the critically important custom of Wassailing the village’s Orchard.

Beltane Border Morris

What’s Wassailing?  Wassailing is the ancient custom of scaring away evil spirits and waking up the apple trees to ensure a good crop, particularly for cider making!  It generally takes place on twelfth night and involves singing, dancing, merriment and drinking, it’s like the circle of life.

The Wassailers were the excellent Beltane Border Morris, seeing them perform is one of our top ten things to do whilst staying at our self-catering Dartmoor holiday home, Three Pound Cottage.

New Sofas

Michaela and Brian were thrilled “Santa must have spent months, with several site surveys, to find just the right sofa’s for this gorgeous quaint holiday cottage, particularly because the cosy wood burner meant he had to use the front door instead of the chimney!”

The new sofa’s are a different style so Michaela is looking forward to shopping for new cushions and throws to bring it all together.

Get on your bike!

The Wray Valley Trail between Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead going through Lustleigh close by Three Pound Cottage the self catering dartmoor holiday rental

Wray Valley Trail

Friday the 20th December saw an early present for cycle enthusiasts, the final 4km section of the Wray Valley Trail between Lustleigh and Wray Barton was finally completed and opened.

The 11km Wray Valley Trail is a multi-use off road path linking Bovey Tracey, Lustleigh and Moretonhampstead to give easier access to the beauty of the Wray Valley.   The route largely follows the disused railway line between Newton Abbot and Moretonhampstead which was closed in 1964 after almost 100 years of service.

The construction of the Trail required the installation of two 25 metre long steel bridges to replace old railway bridges crossing the main road.

Don’t worry, if you’re not a cyclist, this community path is for walkers and equestrians as well.  Why not take a stroll along the Trail whilst holidaying at Three Pound Cottage, our self-catering cottage is perfectly placed to explore the beautiful Wray Valley.
